Rescue Parade 2007

A Chorus Line

by Jane Dempsey and Diane Reynolds

The 14th Annual OES Rescue of Southern California Rescue Parade on September 30, 2007 had quite a line-up with 36 OES.  As the rescue dogs stood in line for our group picture, we realize that the rescue dogs had already put themselves “on the line” and passed their auditions.  They got the job – they had found loving new homes!

“One – Singular Sensation” takes on a whole new meaning as these former rescue dogs were announced with the reasons for them entering the rescue program.  The lyrics “You know you’ll never be lonely with you know who” kept ringing in our ears.  It is very hard not to get a little teary eyed as the dogs proudly show off their owners going around the ring.

For the ninth year in a row, the Burbank Kennel Club graciously hosted our rescue parade.  We could not have asked for more sunshine and beautiful weather.  After the dogs complete their forays around the ring, Marilyn Mayfield, OESCA AKC delegate and President of the Burbank Kennel Club Dog Show presented each dog and owner with a beautiful rosette commemorating the day.  The moment was captured on film and each participant received a photo.

With lots of help from OESCA members Kristi and Marilyn Marshall, Terry Kaufman, Pam and Mark Savioe, Karen Roth, and Heidi Aparicio our set up, parade, sales table, auction, raffle, and tear down went off without a hitch.  General Cage, Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger, Cathy Wills, and Andy Plisko sponsored our parade this year.  Many thanks to them and all the volunteers who helped make the day a success including Mae West, Betty Boop and Grocho Marx look-a-likes.  We could not have done it without all of you!

We kept thinking about lyrics from the musical A Chorus Line all day.  As everyone packed up and went home you could almost hear the words from “What I did for love”.  As a rescue organization, we point the dogs “towards tomorrow and do what we have to do”.  And what fun it is to see them again.  Seniors Daphne 15 years old and Retsel 14 years old looked just wonderful.

Our 15th Annual OES Rescue Dog Parade is scheduled for Sunday, September 28, 2008 at the Burbank Kennel Club Dog Show.  See you then!
